I wanted to provide my recipe for photo #6 because I believe this is among one of my strongest photos for this critique. Most of my photos are edited/processed using a mix of both my iPhone editing options (6S), and the VSCO Cam app. Photo 6 in particular was taken on my backyard stoop. The lighting was dusk, but I had the back door open so that there would be more light particularly on my face and more shadows in the sides and background. I first applied the iPhone 6s "Mono" filter, which increases the intensity to +.50. My face looked a bit washed out from the artificial lighting, so I lowered the highlights to -.08. I increased the shadows to +.08 so that the shadows on my face were not distracting from my expression. Another feature that I used and have grown quite fond of is the "black point" option under the "lighting" edits. This allows you to adjust the tonal range very easily, and really blackens the dark parts of your photos. I then went into the VSCO cam app and applied only +1 of the M5/Fade filter to create just a little bit of a rustic feel. An additional feature that is really nice, especially for close up photos is the clarity option. It really helps to create realism by bringing out the detail in the photo. I only used +2 of the clarity for this photo, but it made the walls and steps look even more grungy. The last editing tool I used was vignette, which darkened the walls around me but maintained the brightness of the white that is behind. I learned a lot about perspective with this photo. Creating an environment is very important for capturing the perfect photo, which I neglected in a lot of my initial shots. I think that I am getting better at developing a type of dialogue between me and the viewer. This picture was actually part of a photo burst, the startled facial expression was because my roommates had just suprised me in the doorway. Regardless of the actual story behind it, the deer in headlights look adds the emotion that many of my other photos seem to lack. Let me know what you guys think!

  1. I like photo number 6 because she looks really confident. Also, the angle the photo was taken makes the photo really great that she looks like a celebrity. I also like photo number 11 because of how the sky looks. I assume it looks like that after editing. It looks like the world is going to end soon. I would vote for photo number 6 since she looks fascinating in the photo with that confident look.

  2. Hi Lauren,
I think you really know what photo you're trying to make with each of your pictures. You have an idea and you're able to accomplish it really well. Your use of lighting and background effectively makes the pictures eye catching and engaging. I think you also have a grasp on how well to angle pictures without ruining the framing. Photo 15 is a great example of how you were able to take an object and make it extend forever. You could easily layer that photo and have the picture work continuously. I also really like photo 17 because you didn't put the rose in the middle of the photo and I think that says a lot about the way you view photos. The deadspace next to the rose only makes me appreciate how you lit the rose itself. My vote for your best photo would be 16 because I think you edited it well enough that it had a good contrast from the top to the bottom. This photo could pass for a painting almost and I like how I can question whether or not it is.

  3. I really loved all of your pictures. I think you did good job on controlling black and white in the pictures such as 11 and 12. The contrasts are really nicely done in the most of your pictures. And your self-portraits are nicely done with confidence looking. And I enjoyed to see your photo 13 which was close up picture of your eyes. It seems like you are telling something through your eyes. I was definitely able to feel some emotions through your eyes. It looks strong but at the same time it looks sad.
my another favorite picture was photo 17. The shadow behind the rose was great. It also looks like it has some emotions in it. It looks like rose got dried and looks lonely.

  4. You did a really good job on these photos and I can feel you have potential skills for photography. Firstly, I can see you adjusted the B&W really well. And you said you use the filter in app, I think that's good. Filters can always give us surprise. I like change these photos' order from bottom to top because I think bottom works are more better. Pic 15 has excellent composition and Pic 13 has great framing, and your eye contact also pretty good. My favorite one is Pic 11 because I really like the combination of sky and cloud, and the contrast is very obviously.

  5. I really like the lighting and composition in a lot of your work. I like the balance of photo 18.
Photo 14 is my favorite because of the composition. I like how the person isn’t exactly centered. I also like the composition of photo 15. It looks like the photo was taken from a sideways view of the fence. It is interesting because the fence looks like its own landscape. I also found the values in photo 11 interesting because the sky almost looks inverse. The angle of the building is also interesting because it is so steep, making the building appear taller than it may actually be.

  6. I am unsure if this was intentional or not but, I really enjoyed the way you ordered your photos, especially with photos 9-12. I liked how images 9 and 10 featured the same backyard in very different ways as well as how images 11 and 12 both incorporated shoes on the power lines. As shown in your recipe for photo 6, you are very skilled in toning your photos and it came through in your work. My vote for your POW would be #15. I like the angle you shot the photo on as it made the fence look as though it went on forever.

  7. I think you have many interesting photos. Do you have an affinity towards windows and doors? It's one of those things where you're like, "oh, what is behind this door" or "oh, what will I see if I open or peer this window", which clearly create a mysterious feel capturing the purpose of the assignment. I gravitated towards photo 5, 10, and 18. Photo 5 because I think the use of geometric shapes and defined lines in addition to the use of light creates an elegant look to the photo. Photo 10 because the half covered window makes me want to know what will I see out of the exposed window? And lastly, photo 18 because I cannot really tell what exactly is the object in the photo but I cannot stop looking at the spirals. The color clarity of the spirals make the photo clean. I vote for photo 18.
