Hi everyone! So for this critique I tried to include a lot more environment in my photos, rather than just close-ups of my subjects. At the same time, many of my photos I wanted to keep simple because i'm a firm believer of beauty in simplicity. I tried to maintain a mellow-type mood in these photos because it communicates more of who I am as a person. I did occasionally experience with vibrant colors such as in 5-9 and 14; these were days where it was nice out, or I was feeling particularly elated. My personal favorite would be photo number one, just because of how little editing needed to be done to it. It was truly a beautiful sight. From an art perspective though, I think I am proudest of photo number 2. I was able to keep some things a mystery in the photo, by only including the environment in the reflection of the puddle. I edited this photo using my iPhone 6s editing app. I increased the black point, which is a tool I am now very fond of. It really brings out the darks in the photo and creates a rich color. I then increased the highlights and saturation to make the lighter colors (blue sky, bike) slightly more vibrant. I also increased the clarity on my VSCO cam app, which brings out the details in your photo.

Photo 2 utilized the reflection in the puddle very nicely. I like that the eye is drawn first to the bike, but then since I looked long enough i was drawn to the light in the reflection and could see the bell tower. Photo 10 was very nice as well, because it showed how man has really twisted and strangled mother nature. This tree is probably growing out of a small patch of concrete in a fully developed city or town. It's almost like the tree is looking at itself in the window's reflection in horror as to what has become of its once natural surroundings. Overall, I vote for photo 4 as your photo of the week. It looks like you put a warm filter on the photo. I like that it is very geographical with straight lines and clean angles. The crisp reflection in the water makes it look very neat as well. Great job!
ReplyDeleteLauren, all of your photos are good. Photo 10 shows an interesting graffiti. Also, stairs and some wires enhance backstreet atmosphere. Photo 2 through 7 are very related each other and show a beautiful city nearby river. You used a very low angle for photo 9. Besides the angle, you also added an interesting background. Personally, I saw leaves first then my eyes caught the circle and surroundings. My favorite among all is photo 2. I really like the way you compose this picture. Rather than real objects, you captured reflected structure and tree branches which add mysterious feelings. Placed bicycle looks interesting. Finally, I would vote for photo 2 as your POW. Good job!
ReplyDeleteWhen scrolling through your photos I immediately settled on photo 2. I think you used focus and color really well in allowing for a lot to look at. I want to look at the bike but I’m also drawn to the water and everything in the reflection. I really get a sense of what you’re looking at in this photo. The subtle green and brown tones in the water really add a calming effect to the photo, which I also enjoy. Another photo I stopped on was photo 12. I like the point of view in this photo and the use of the brown/tan colors that stand out through the entire picture. It’s very relaxing and makes me wish I were there. To me, this picture feels like it was taken many years ago based on the details of the photo. I think you did a great job of lighting this photo to push the tan hues of the photo to darken or lighten perfectly. I would vote photo 12 as POW.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed to see all of your pictures. Your pictures are very antique and vintage. I was drawn into your second photo. I think you have captured a reflection nicely. Even though you did not take a photo of what is there above a bike. You still can show us through a reflection. The branches look really nice. Also, photo 13 is another my favorite picture. The smoke appears dramatically in this picture. And I like how the smoke cover half of your face which leaves mysterious feeling.
ReplyDeleteI would love to vote for photo 13.
I love your photos! May I ask where you went to take these photos, especially in photos 1-7? I think you did a great job at incorporating shadows and utilizing angles in shooting the photos. I like simplicity in photo 17. Picture 2 is my favorite. The photo evokes a nostalgic feel, and the clear reflection of the building in the water is superb. I am curious of how you were able to capture that.
ReplyDeleteI took them in Amsterdam and London!
DeleteHi Lauren, I love the large scale of your photos for this critique. I think you capture a lot within each frame. Photo 12 is awesome, there is a lot of depth and mystery. It is hard to tell whether outside of the cafe is a dock or a pier of some sort. The bicyclists add to the sense of mystery too and act as an additional focal point to the glass mug. I really love the color in photos 8 and 11. I would have to vote for 11. For one, the color is very interesting, and captures a nice moment during dusk. The sense of depth, mystery, and adventure is quite strong in this photo as well. I really wonder what is at the end of the alleyway.
ReplyDeleteGood Job. I really enjoy to see your photos. Especially for No. 3,4 and 18. There are all my favorites. Pic 3 have great backlight shot and the sunshine on railway make them special. The scale and composition are very good. Looks like the railways are come from the sunshine. Photo 2 and 4 are both use water to reflect subject, I really love that but I prefer the Photo 4 because the framing is better then No.2, Pic 4 looks like there have a same world and buildings under the water, very fantastic. I really want to vote the No. 18 to be the POW because I really like the photo that paste on wall and behind you in No.18. I was seen the art photo before and I really enjoy that because the expression in her eyes and details are lifelike. And I think the relationship between you and the woman in art has go beyond the race, color and national boundary.
ReplyDeleteI think photo 7 is your best photo. I like how the subject (the bench) is positioned in contrast to the rest of the background. I think this photo does a great job of providing a clear subject but also giving us more environment in the background. The browns of the trees also give more light to the color of the bench and allow it to stand out more.
