I tried to really expand my photos for this critique. I struggled with framing and interesting subjects the first week, so I tried to do things I wouldn't normally do in my photography. I definitely experimented with color - some of my photos are very vibrant, but some have a more faded look that I felt added more mystery to them. While I thin color is important to add to your photos, I also think that a touch of color helps create a certain feel in some images over others. I edited my pictures with the VSCO app for iPhone.

  1. Christie, I like the way your vintage-looking photos. Due to vintage effects, your photos look dark but toned down. I assume photo 10 is one of your self-portrait photos. Your pillow/artwork behind your head looks good. Although I am assuming you took this photo indoor, you look like a giant standing in front of NYC skyliners. An witty photo! Photo 11 looks interesting. While lights have different colors on the right, there are another reflected objects on the left. Lastly, I would vote photo 11 as your POW.

  2. I think you did really good job on controlling colors such as 5,7, and 13. I loved how the red color appear on these pictures. This is not a strong red color (these are kind of tone-down red). I think these pictures show mysterious mood because of the color red. Also, on photo 7, I feel like you are trying to say something but, you are hesitating. I also feel like you are trying to convey something through your self-portraits since you did not show your entire face.
I would like to vote for 7.

  3. I like photo 4- it reminds me of the beach and summer, and I love the warm weather! I also really like photo 12. There is a great pop of color, and the broken wax (I think) symbolizes that sometimes people get so "Burned out" that they come to a point where they break. I think that overall my favorite photo of this group is photo 11. When i first saw it, it made me think of civilization. There are so many different kinds of people that are on earth, but we are all striving to do the same thing- succeed and do well. These lights are very similar, as they are all different but are striving to light the room. Very nice work this week!

  4. Your framing techniques are intriguing, and may be the best i've seen so far in this class. You utilize corners and edges very well, which adds mystery to the photo because it makes me want to see the rest of the subject. I think you also used color and a creative white balance phenomenally. I really like photo 2 because it is mysterious. It makes me question why there are so many light posts squeezed together. Because they are pushed into the lower corner, I am unable to see how many other light posts there are, or even where they are. I stared at this photo for a few minutes just wondering why anyone would need those all shoved together like that. It is also very dark besides the lights, which really extrapolates the subject. I also really liked photo 10 (and your pillowcase haha). Again you cut most of the subject (your face) from the photo using the lower corner. I can only see the top of your head and your eye, which is shut. I am assuming you are either sleeping or sad, or you just need to rest your eyes. Either way, the composition of this photo, as well as the coolness of the blues really had me engaged as a viewer. It gave me a point of view that was unique, which resulted in a meaningful response.

  5. Hi Christie, I would agree with Lauren. Your framing techniques a unique and mysterious feel to them. Photo 2 has a really interesting and spooky feel to it; reminding me of victorian London. I love the color in photo 10. The blue adds a nice cerebral feel to the photo. I also like the color and composition of photo 11. The descending lines create a clear path for the eye, but it is not predictable by any means. Photo 15 has beautiful color. I like the juxtaposition of the sharp blades of grass against the soft flower. I would have the vote for photo 17 as my favorite. The perspective, composition, and color are very intriguing and add a strong sense of mystery to the photo.

  6. I think your photos work really well as a group. You used a set of colors that reflect in almost every photo, which I think makes them even more interesting. I also enjoy the vintage look to your photos that allow for the colors to feel faded and calming. One of my favorite photos is number 12. It took me a couple seconds to realize what it was which means I was looking at it for a bit. I think this picture works perfectly in using color to create mystery in the photo. The red/orange color of the candle clashes well against the black background. It makes the abstract shape work well in the photo and makes me pay attention to the detail of the shape. Another photo I really enjoyed was number 15. You did a great job in framing this photo because the pink in the flower almost looks like it’s just floating in the photo. There’s so much green happening in the photo that the pink is a serious contrast from what else is going on. It’s extremely eye catching and I found this photo to be the best in your bunch. I would vote photo 15 for POW.
