Final: The Self

Vancesca, you must be a talented photographer. You have great design skills when you take photos. Composition, and usage of angles are superb! I really like both your old and new photos. Among them, the new collection, the 5th chapter, catch my eyes. The first, a half rocks and another half trees, displays two main colors. For the third photo, an arrow-headed tree looks interesting. Finally, it is time to vote your POY (picture of year)! As Prof. Berkowitz mentioned and I voted before, I would like to vote the fourth photo from chapter 4. Your note adds a great element to this photo which directs a dog. Also, the color of ink is also the same as part of sea. Color composition is also very interesting and visually appealing. Thank you for showcasing great works for this semester! Oh, by the way, I would like to visit the Chinese Lantern Festival, too. Your chapter 6 photo look great indeed.
ReplyDeleteThis portfolio is spectacular. Each photo is composed in a unique and different way. Even though we don't know each other personally, I feel like I get a sense of who you are from this compilation and that is what art is all about! There is multiplicity in almost every one of your photos, which makes them so visually engaging that it is hard for me to pick out a favorite. I really like the chapter "one with nature," especially the picture of you on the hammock with bubbles. I experimented with bubbles in my photos as well, which you will see in the last chapter of my final portfolio. The photos in your chapters "urban living" and "thanks for the memories" share similar qualities, but are also different and I think the way you chose to separate them is interesting. I love all of your photos, but i'm going to have to agree with Hong and vote for the dog picture as your POY. I voted this photo as your POW in the second critique. This photo really reveals how effective simplicity can be in establishing a mood and tone. The colors compliment each other, and give off a "cool" feeling of peace and serenity. Even without the dog, the picture would be great. However, the dog adds the sense of mystery that can get your viewers to resonate with the photo. Such great work, Vancesca.

ReplyDeleteI love your portfolio! I love the composition that you used and the way you organized the photos is great. I admire the angles you choose to use in your photos as well. I would have to say that the 4th photo in chapter 4 is my favorite overall (the journal with the dog in the background). I love the use of color here. I also like how the picture is focused on the words but you can't quite make out what is being written. The beach and the dog just add a great touch to this photo. Nice job!
I love each of the photos in your portfolio and each of your chapters works with the set of photos. It's a great mixture of pictures that work really well together. My favorite of these chapters is Thanks for the Memories and One with Nature. Both have such diversity with each photo but relate to one another. My favorite photo of yours from the semester would be the 2nd of Thanks for the Memories. When I originally saw it I thought it was very unique and wonderfully edited. That would be my pick for photo of the year. Amazing job this semester!
ReplyDeleteI LOVED your portfolio a lot! I think you did good job on playing with angles really well. Especially, in the chapter2 and chapter 4 you made your shots really interesting with angles. I definitely think these photos look different because of the angles. I also enjoying your self-portfolio, since you have hidden half of your face, it looks mysterious. And your facial expression look like you have something to tell but you cannot.
ReplyDeleteI would vote for chapter 2!
Vancesca, I really liked the scale and mystery of your photos this semester. For starters, I love the first photo in discovery. It is hard to tell quite what it is, I am guessing it is the interior of a bathroom, but could be completely wrong. The right half of the photo has beautiful, almost iridescent looking texture, that reminds me of stardust. I would have to vote this photo as POW and my favorite, along with the whole chapter. One with nature had some really nice use of light. The tree trunk in the second picture looks mysterious and interesting in relation to the background and shadows that are cast upon it. I also really like the self-portrait that is second to last in that chapter. The way the trees in the background are slightly out of focus, along with the way the sunlight is hitting all of the edges in the photo, makes the picture really successful.
ReplyDeleteGreat job on your final portfolio. I loved your chapter Urban Living. I though they had great elements of mystery. I also really liked chapter 6 culture. I think the colors in that photo were amazing. I would like to pick that as your pow.
